After two days of cool, cloudy weather with spells of rain, the sun returned to the skies for a true spring like afternoon on Saturday, the final day of Sacramento State’s Mondo Mid-Major Challenge. With the sun, the Nevada Wolf Pack seemed to bloom in its tune up for the two big weekends ahead, the Mt SAC Relays April 19-21 and the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Cal on April 27-28.
Debbie Amoah/Jr (Berlin, Ger) continued her fine 2012 season upping her season’s best in the Long Jump to 5.93m/19’5.5”. The versatile Amoah also hurdled 14.27, her second best time in the 100s, and came back for a somewhat rare appearance in the 100, running a PR 12.24. Amoah did not compete in the event in which she leads the conference, the Triple Jump. Her next appearance in that event will be at this week’s Mt SAC Relays.
Running in the section directly after Amoah’s, freshman Anita Momodu (Rancho HS/Las Vegas, NV) ran 12.25 in the 100 to gather her own PR. Momodu also anchored the 4 X 100 relay to its best mark of the year, 48.34.
Senior Alexa Anderson (Spanish Springs HS/Reno, NV), who is having the best year of her career, recorded her second best score in the Heptathlon notching 4321 to take the conference lead. Her performance came in spite of rain and cool weather the first two days at Sacramento, conditions far less than ideal for top performances. Anderson, a true jack-of-all-trades, who is willing to fill in wherever needed, came back Saturday to lead off the improving 4 X 100 relay.
Junior Aislynn Mueller (Oak Ridge HS/El Dorado Hills, CA), a 400 Hurdler who has also been strongly contributing to both relays, ventured back into the 100 Hurdles for the first time since her high school days. Her 15.07 indicates that she may have a chance at scoring in both hurdle races in the WAC.
Steeplechasers Jenifer McEntire/Sr (Clovis East HS/Clovis, CA) and Demerey Kirsch/Fr (Reno HS/Reno, NV) made a foray into the 1500 as speedwork for their main event. McEntire took advantage of the return to her previous focal event to get a good 3 second PR, running 4:36.35. Kirsch established her collegiate best in 4:50.17.
Freshman 800 meter runners, Anne Underwood (Valley HS/Las Vegas, NV) and Ciara O’Driscoll (Damonte Ranch HS/Reno, NV) also made good use of Sacramento State’s fast track to run a 2:17.39 PR and a 2:19.53 collegiate best, respectively.
Freshman Jenae Brown (Northwest Career and Technical Academy/Las Vegas, NV) demonstrated some consistency as she threw over 12.50m/41’ for the second meet in a row, tossing 12.61m/41’ 4.5”.
Several of Nevada’s top individuals sat out this weekend in preparation for the coming major competitions. Senior Javelin specialists Sarah Nichols and Danielle Stallworth, High Jumper Nicole Williams, and middle distance specialist Mariah Gramolini were among those that trained through the weekend.
